ATTENTION - EXCEPTIONAL DOCUMENT !
In the '92 - 93 Vendée Globe I was sailing towards Cape Horn and just passed Diego Ramirez Island when the wind from NW built up to 65 knots with gusts of 75 knots. For a while the boat was surfing well with the mast only, but a breaker wave turned the boat parallel to the waves… and she stopped in this very position ! Without sail I couldn't start again, so we were drifting on the side for a few hours. When the wind dropped about 50 knots, then I could set sail again.
In this position, heeling about 60 - 80 degrees, the boat was surprisingly stable and safe, I had time enough to take photos.
Half a day later I passed the Cape Horn safely, third time in my life.
