I started late in Photography. I bought myself an Olympus SLR for my 20th birthday but it didn't take me long to realise that I wanted to be a photographer by profession.

I learned photography on the job first by assisting photographers in my home town of Wellington in New Zealand then for three years in London first as a studio assistant then as a freelance assistant for a variety of photographers in fields as diverse as fashion, cars and food.

When my UK Visa expired I left London and started working as a professional sailor on a variety of classic sailing yachts.

I crewed on various yachts for almost 12 years. Photography was not put entirely on hold, there was always a camera near by but not always enough time to devote to producing images.

I moved back to New Zealand to relaunch my photography career in 1997. In 1998 I saw a newspaper ad for a photographer job with Internet production company Quokka Sports who were gearing up to produce the official web site for the 2000 America’s Cup in Auckland.

This was a case of stars aligning. Bringing sailing and photography together as my new career. I worked for Quokka as photographer through the 1999 Louis Vuitton and 2000 America’s Cups. From there I pursued more and more sailing work, building my portfolio and gaining experience until eventually in 2004  I was hired as photographer to Emirates Team New Zealand for their campaign to win the 33rd America’s Cup in Valencia.

Through my career so far I have shot all types of boats and most of the great events around the world. Including four America’s Cups, MedCups, The Volvo Ocean race, America’s Cup World Series, Extreme Sailing Series, World Match Racing, The Barcelona World Race, Super Yacht regattas, Classics and many many others.

I live with my wife and two cats in Auckland, New Zealand.

During the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Abu Dhabi in 2012, skippers were invited to take part in a local Dhow race.
I accompanied Chris Nicholson, skipper of CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand.
Thankfully our Dhow was anchored at the very left end of the start line so that we had a clear view of the entire fleet as the race started.
On the signal the Dhow crews haul up sails and drop their anchor lines to get underway.
