The 1993 European Grand Prix takes place in Donington (UK) in a highly politicized context. Jean Todt is preparing to leave for Scuderia Ferrari after the F1 project has been abandoned at Peugeot. Ecclestone decided on the location of this Grand Prix, by respect for Tom Wheatcroft, owner of the circuit and of the largest collection of single-seaters in the world, but also to send a strong signal to the Silverstone circuit, in open war against him.
Senna himself negotiates fiercely with McLaren and performs only "freelance" races. The wet conditions at the start of the race allowed him once again to demonstrate his talent on the soggy track by going up 5 places in the 1st lap. From the 2nd lap, his McLaren MP4 / 8 Ford far outpaces the respective Williams FW15C Renault of Prost and Hill, between Craner Curves and the Old hairpin.
